Learn more about heat pumps

In summer, a cool liquid within the heat pump attracts the heat from inside your house. The heat goes outside, leaving dry, cool air inside.

In winter, the liquid within the heat pump gets very cold–much colder than the air on even the frostiest days. This lets the air pump draw heat from the air outside your home, which is "warm" by comparison, and move it inside.

FAQ

How much does the Climate Control plan cost?

Typically, the project value is similar to installing a new heating and central AC systems at the same time—$15,000-25,000, depending on the amount of work required.

To make this work affordable for more people, Sealed offers fair, transparent pricing and payment plans that fit any budget. If the upgrades don’t reduce energy use as much as we promised, Sealed will pay you the difference.

Are heat pumps a new technology?

No. Heat pumps have been around for decades. The technology has advanced significantly in the last 10 years, especially for cold climates. They are the most popular heating and cooling technology choice in Europe, and they're installed in more than 12 million US homes.

Are heat pumps expensive to maintain?

Nope. The systems we install generally require little to no professional maintenance.

Like air conditioning systems, you need to clean the filters every few months. Cleaning the filters is super easy—just take them out, rinse in water, and put them back.

We also recommend that your contractor come by once a year to make sure everything is working properly, just like you would a traditional system.

You can also include a labor warranty with your heat pump, which means if you need a contractor to fix anything, the work is covered. It’s like Apple Care for your heating and cooling technology system.

Is it expensive to heat with a heat pump?

No. Heat pumps use as little as 1/3 the energy of traditional heating systems, which reduces their cost of operation.

Heat pumps are also 20-50% more efficient at cooling than traditional AC systems, so you'll use far less electricity in the summer too.

Can heat pumps keep my house warm in really cold weather?

Absolutely. Modern heat pumps can operate efficiently down to 0 degrees Fahrenheit, and handle weather into the negative teens and twenties.

That said, your heat pump's efficiency will drop a bit in temperatures below 0. Some customers choose to keep their old heating systems installed as a back-up for extremely cold weather. Proper air sealing and insulation, available through our Comfort Plan, can also help.

What happens if the power goes out?

Your heat pump can't run without electricity. But this is no different than your traditional system: almost all heating and cooling systems, including oil and natural gas furnaces and boilers, need electricity to run.

How is a heat pump installed?

If you have ductwork for heating or AC, a centralized heat pump system can distribute heated/cooled air via the existing ductwork.

If you don't have existing ductwork that's OK! Heat pumps can feature room-by-room distribution fixtures called "mini-splits," which are small wall-mounted units that deliver your heating and cooling. You can also choose to get ductwork installed with a central system.

Is the Climate Control plan the same thing as geothermal?

Geothermal and Climate Control are both built around heat pump systems.

Geothermal systems use what's called a ground source heat pump. This means they are installed underground, so they can pull heat from the earth. Plus, they only work if your house has ductwork.

Climate Control uses air source heat source heat pumps, which pull heat from the air. Air source heat pumps work with any infrastructure setup, and there's no digging required.

Can heat pumps work with solar?

Yes! Heat pumps pair perfectly with solar because they're powered by electricity.

If you don't have or can't install solar panels on your house, you may be able to participate in a community solar program. You can also purchase your electricity from a renewable energy provider.

What will happen to my old heating system after the heat pump is installed?

We can remove it for you during installation, or you can choose to keep it as a backup for really cold days.
