“Our house was cold for years,” says Rose Barbera. “I’d go into my daughter’s room, and she’d be in bed on her computer wearing a sweatshirt with all the blankets wrapped around her. In the summer, it’d be the opposite. She could barely sleep in there. I guess she just got used to it.”

Rose always meant to fix the problems, but something else would inevitably come up. It wasn’t until she heard about Sealed from her utility company, Con Edison, that she saw a viable solution.

“I liked that Sealed said they could make a big difference in how my house felt without doing a ton of work. It wouldn’t be major construction or anything. And I didn’t have to cover the upfront costs. I was skeptical at first because I didn’t know anybody who’d done anything like this before. The most I heard was some neighbors getting a wood burning stove to cut down on their heating bills.”

Improved insulation in the walls and attic and better air sealing in the foundation helped Rose’s house better regulate temperature and airflow. And an upgraded thermostat helped Rose control her house’s heating and cooling systems.

Now, Rose says, her house is feeling better and she and her family doesn’t have to suffer through the seasons.

“My daughter is finishing school soon and coming back to live here. It’s supposed to be for a year but you never know. It gives me great pleasure knowing her room will finally be comfortable. No more sweating in the summer and freezing in the winter. It was the worst.”
